FLOOD AND DESERT

Reflection from Gen 9: 8-15; 1Pt 3: 18-22; Mk 1: 12-15

We have started our penitential journey called Lent Season. This period proposes a journey of conversion, preparing us to celebrate the central mysteries of our faith, renewing our commitment with the new life given by Christ with his resurrection. Lent season is a great retreat of forty days for many Christians, reminding us about the period of forty days of Moses on the Mont Sinai to receive the Commandments; the forty years of the journey of purification of the people of Israel in desert and the experience of Jesus in the desert also before his mission. Jesus overcame all temptations because let himself be guided by the Holy Spirit. Everyone who follows his footsteps, opened to a journey of conversion is supported by the strength from above in order to perform the God’s will with success.

The readings of this first Sunday introduce us in the journey of renewal of our baptism, showing us the way proposed by God to renew the life in the world. Through Noah and his family God makes a first covenant with the humanity, renewing all creation. The proposal here is new creation, which happens when the human being change his options, performing new relationship with God and all others living beings. The covenant is sign that God doesn’t want to lose the human beings, proposing always new opportunity of purification and conversion. In the second reading, St. Peter speaks about the effect of the Flood for all creation as symbol of the baptism which purifies, giving human being new life in Christ.

In the first part of the gospel, Jesus is led to the desert by the strength of the Spirit. Like this he was very motivated to live this experience focused in the preparation to the mission entrusted to him by the Father. In the bible, Desert is always a special place to meet God and it was in that place where the people of Israel experienced the constant love and care of God. For Jesus it was a meaningful experience through that he could discern better the plan of God. During this time, he was also tempted by Satan and conquered all temptations by being obedient to his Father. He accepted that situation in order to show how to overcome the trap of the tempter. The temptations to wealth, power and glory faced by Jesus didn’t distract him from the essential, which was to do God’s will.

In the second part of the gospel we have the summary of the beginning of the mission of Jesus with the announcement of the Kingdom of God and the invitation to conversion. The presence of Jesus brings the Kingdom of God, inaugurating a new time, time of the salvation. That is the good news which was expected for all. In order to believe in the good news announced by Jesus, it is necessary conversion. The heart is the centre of the decisions and the conversion take place in the heart; for that true faith in Jesus is possible only if the heart is transformed.

In his experience in the desert, Jesus was guided by the Spirit, helped by the Angels and he was very focused about the plan of God. For that nothing distracted him from the essential. As followers of Jesus, constantly we are tempted to give up because it is the plan of the tempter. But the example of fidelity the Master is invitation to us to let ourselves be guided by the Holy Spirit, being helped by others and having very clear objectives in our life in order to discern well in everything. The temptation more common in our communities is to think that there are people enough to serve or to take advantage of the some duty in order to dominate and humiliate others. May this Lent season help us in our journey of conversion, motivating us to stay focused in the essential - like Jesus in relating to the plan of God - in order to overcome the temptation to follow other ways.

GHARIKA NA JANGWA

Kutafakari kutoka Mwanzo 9: 8-15; 1Pt 3: 18-22; Mk 1: 12-15

THE NEED OF A NEW TEACHING

Reflection from Dt 18: 15-20; 1Cor 7: 32-35; Mk 1: 21-28

These readings are an invitation to all of us to welcome the teaching of the Word of God which has the power of transforming the life of the people, giving them support in order to be messengers of a new time. According to the First Reading, the prophet is a person called from among the people in order to speak to them only what God asks him to speak. The inspiration of God, together with the availability of the prophet, made great difference in the life of the people of Israel, leading them to experience a new life. Saint Paul praises the person who dedicates himself/herself to the service of the Lord and motivates all members of the community to continue serving in total surrender without reservation.

Jesus starts his public mission announcing the Kingdom of God and inviting to the conversion. Like this he called the first disciples, according to our meditated last week. Jesus invites his disciples to stay with him and teaches them through the experience of life. The majority part of the miracles which he performs, he does it in the presence of his disciples. Since the beginning, his disciples have been invited to participate in his mission and to share his feelings in relating to the reality of the people, especially the poor ones. Jesus liked to visit and teach in the synagogues because in that places the people usually gathered together to listen to the Word of God and accept his will. This was also a good opportunity to teach his disciples, helping the people to open the hearts to the appeals of God.

The authority given to Jesus by the Father directly shows the superiority of his teaching before the scribe style. Little by little the people were understanding that this person Jesus, who spoke with love and authenticity, were the messenger of God.  His words are full of life and lead to the conversion. His way of speaking bore in the heart the passion for the Kingdom. As messenger of God, he is the unique with authority to teach the people. The ones who have the task to lead the people, must listen to his voice. Even the evil spirits recognise the identity and authority of Jesus, but don’t share his commitment with the sake of the humanity.  For that, Jesus doesn’t dialogue with them; he simply gives order, imposing silence to them. These evil spirits are symbol of the forces opposed to God's plan, paralyzing the people and preventing them to exercise their capabilities in full way. Before these forces, Jesus imposes authority and acts as Liberator.

The presence of Jesus among the human beings inaugurates a new time: the time of God's salvation. The salvation communicated through the mouth of Jesus is accompanied by the concretes gestures of liberation. According to the action of Jesus, the strength of the Word of God does not come from human interpretation, but from divine inspiration. For that his teaching is considered very new. But it is not enough to recognise the identity of Jesus as Messiah of God, because even the evil spirits do that. It is necessary accept his proposal of conversion, letting his power removing the shackles which prevent us to perform good relationship with God and with others. The resistance against Jesus is opposition to the realization of the kingdom. In this case, we act as adversaries of God, unable to follow faithfully the footsteps of his Son who, when proclaims the good news of the kingdom asks for free and total membership of each person. For us, the search of this kingdom should be a priority, because on it lays the meaning of our life and mission.

The message of this gospel is a proposal of a new discipleship. It is a invitation to us to review our capacity of surrender to the one who has called us and wants we should be his messengers. Identifying himself with those who follow him, Jesus continues opposing himself to any force or mentality that oppresses people’s lives. In other words, through our actions, the liberators gestures of Christ still happen in the lives of many people. From him we received the authority to be authentic people in order to speak the truth. The sure that Jesus accompanies us in our journey motivates us to fight against all evil and sin which prevent us to serve God with generosity and gratuity. May his grace help us to perform this purpose.

VOCATION AS HISTORY OF LOVE

Reflection from 1Sm 3: 3-10; 1Cor 6: 13c-15a.17-20; John 1, 35-42

The liturgy of this Sunday confirms that God establishes a relationship of love with each person, calling him/her to the service of his people.  God takes initiative to call the person by the own name, valuing his/her history and identity. Although God can do everything alone, he wanted to use us as his collaborators. This reality inspired Saint Augustine to say: “God created us without our participation, but he wanted to save us with our participation”.

The vocation of Samuel, narrated in the First reading, is model for all vocations. God comes to meet him in his reality and calls him by his name. Of course he needed of a process of discernment in order to understand the desires of God. The priest Eli was the mediation of God to help Samuel to recognise the voice of God and answer to his appeals. In the same way, we need to be very attentive to discern the voice of God among the several voices which we normally hear. In this process we have been helped by many people and situations. Like Eli, we are invited to be available to help others to discover the will of God to them. Like Samuel, we need to be attentive to the call of the Lord and being generous in our answers to his appeals. Inspired by the word of God and supported with the help of others, our answers to God must be yes always.

According to Saint Paul, our vocation is to be part of the body of Christ as living temples of God. Through the baptism, God has made us into a dwelling-place for himself. That is the statement of Saint Paul in his letter: “you are temple of God and his Spirit lives in you”. So, as members of the Body of Christ, our identity is to be Church through the communion and participation. The testimony of life and the respect with our physical body contribute to the up-building of this Holy Temple which is all of us. We cannot transform our body in source of pleasure and sin. Everything which we do concerning our body must be for the glory of God. Although the care about the external beauty is good, it cannot prevent us to take special care of the living temple of God within us.

The gospel speaks about the vocation of the first disciples of Jesus and the people and situations used by God as mediations to reveal his mysteries to the humankind. It is continuity of the text of baptism in which the Father gives testimony about his Son, confirmed his mission as Saviour and inviting all to follow his words.  In the text today, John recognises Jesus who is passing by and points him as “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”. The testimony of John motivates others to follow Jesus. John is good example of mediator, who promotes the meeting and disappears with humility. The experience of “come and see” proposed by Jesus transformed the life of the first disciples, making them new witnesses of him in order to motivates others to the discipleship. The first disciples were very attentive to the mediations of God, let themselves be guided, showing availability to follow the Master and remain with him, assimilating his life’s style in order to become witnesses.

Our vocational journey is history of love and can be compared with the calling of Samuel and the first disciples of Jesus. Each day God wakes our ear in order to hear his Words and let ourselves to be transformed by them. He continues speaking to us also through the people and situation of the community. He expects that we may be attentive to this signs and answer to his appeals positively. Like Eli and John the Baptist, we are invited also to contribute in the vocational work in order other people, especially the youth ones, may discover the voice of God that is calling them in their daily life. May we live our vocation with joy and faithfulness, motivating others in their journey as followers of Jesus.

WITO KAMA UZOEFU WA UPENDO

Kutafakari kutoka Sam 3: 3-10; 1Wak 6: 13c-15a.17-20; Yoh 1,35-42

FEAST OF THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD

Reflection from Luke 2, 1-20

According to this text, the message about the birth of Jesus is a message of great joy for all, because the Saviour was born for all. Let us rejoice because God loves us, he is in our midst and brings salvation to us! The salvation is work of God but it performs itself on earth with the cooperation of the human being. Let us take Mary and Joseph as example. In the simplicity of the event and the people involved, it is manifested the greatness of God. This reality confirms an African proverb which says, “simple people, performing simple things and in simple places are able to change the world”.  The great changes that our society needs should happen inside the human being. A new society will happen when each person realises the necessity of changing himself/herself more than to try changing others. “The world will change if we start changing our actions through our behaviour and our choices.” So, Christmas is time of changing behaviours and choices.

In Jesus, God became one of us, assuming our human condition and offering new proposal of life. For that it is not enough to acknowledge in Jesus the salvation of God; it is necessary to let ourselves be guided by his message of peace and love. The birth of Jesus transformed all human beings in a unique family, filling the hearts of joy, optimism and hope. In fact, God reveals himself as neighbour, poor and rejected, inviting to recognise the value of the small gestures and projects. Without doubt this option of God letting us embarrassed, inviting us to think and to act differently in everything. So, Christmas is time of changing our mentality.

Another aspect very important to our refection this night is about the shepherds, who were people usually despised in the society. The shepherds were watchful people who look after the animals around Bethlehem during the night. They were truly watchful, because in them were very alive the sense of God and his nearness. They were the first people to receive the great message of joy because their hearts were watchful. Only the watchful heart is able to believe in good news and to expect better reality in each new dawn. Only the watchful heart is able to have courage to start the journey in order to meet God in unexpected places: in the reality of a small child in a very poor place. So, Christmas is time to look differently in order to see beyond and to make the difference in the life of many people.

The Almighty God accepts the condition of a small child, in total dependence of the human care and love. The faith leads us to recognise this small child of Bethlehem in each child we meet in our daily journey. Each child requests our love. Let us think today also, in a special way, about that children who do not experience the love of their parents; about the street boys who do not have a place to live; about the children who are used as soldiers, transformed in instruments of violence, instead of being instruments of reconciliation and peace; about the children who are victims of sexual abuse; about the poor children who are forced to give their dreams up because of harsh economic conditions.  The Small child of Bethlehem is a renewed appeal so that we give the best of ourselves in order to end the tribulation of these children. May the light of Bethlehem touch our hearts, making them sensible to this reality.  So, Christmas is time of sensibility, developing attitudes of care and affection with the ones who are need.

Although we live in a consumer society, which distracts our attention from the essential, we need to be watchful. Christmas is much more than consumption. It is feast of the revelation of the Mystery of the love of God that transforms the human heart, making sensible to the divine appeals. God loves us in gratuity and generosity, without any merit of our part. This experience should lead us to do the same thing He does. Like this, Christmas will be more than one period in the year. It will be Christmas always if we learn to love truly and to put more effort to up-building the fraternal and righteous society for the good of all.

Have a Merry Christmas!

Fr. Ndega
